Follow the bargemen’s trail on the towpath!

A moving landmark from the past, the towpath allows you to follow the trail of the bargemen who pulled the barges by the strength of their horses. Formerly exclusively reserved for commercial activity, the river Mayenne has become a unique place which reveals, in a preserved environment, its tourist, ecological and playful attractions.

Former railway lines, the “Mayenne/Javrons-les-Chapelles” and “La Chapelle Anthenaise/Ambrières-les-Vallées” railways have been transformed into greenways. There are 73 km of walks awaiting you; hikers, cyclists and horse riders, offering you possibilities of itineraries combined with the towpath.

Vélo Francette® is 617 km to ride, 7 departments to discover, 3 regional nature parks to pass through and 25 towns and villages of character to visit.
The greenway from Ambrières les Vallées and the towpath from Mayenne make it possible to integrate this cycle route.

Restaurants, converted lock keepers’ houses, campsites and bed and breakfast accommodation are available all along the route to welcome you. To guarantee a warm welcome and quality services, you have at your disposal labelled equipment, which can be found on the “Bicycle Home” sign.
