Born in Mayenne on the banks of the river, Laëtitia Chorin had dreamed of travelling ever since the holidays of her childhood.

She travelled a great dal with her parents, visiting all the French regions. Since then she has crisscrossed Europe, either for business of pleasure and today is back in Mayenne, where she made the connection between what is useful and what is fun as a tourist guide for visitors from far and wide.

But she always had another idea in mind…

“Today I run the the Refuges du Halage, three lock keepers' houses on the banks of the river Mayenne, which I hope are a real showcase for the Mayenne region. Travellers can rest and relax in a natural and calm environment, but also get all the information they need and the best local products. "

Laëtitia has three houses

“I had been planning for a very long time to open accommodation in the spirit of the youth hostels I visited when I was young. The project coincided with a call for projects from the Mayenne authorities wishing to do something with its old lock keepers’ houses.

This is how three pretty buildings on the banks of the river Mayenne have become lodges for walkers and riders on the Vélo Francette route (stage 8).

The Maison du Port (in Sacé) opened in March 2019, the Fourmondière Supérieur and the Richardière (in Montflours) followed in 2020.

PRACTICAL AND COMFORTABLE

“Having traveled a lot, I was inspired by my experiences to offer hikers and cycle tourists something practical and comfortable, but also pretty, with a cocooning effect to let them rest in the best conditions. I tell them all about Mayenne and they tell me about their journey – I often get pictures of their continued adventures in my email! “

THE VELO FRANCETTE CYCLE PATH

“The advantage of the river Mayenne towpath is that it is very easy to travel on. Families with children and less sporty visitors really appreciate it. There’s so much to see along the Vélo Francette route, the landscapes, the local produce… I try to make sure that my guests find themselves at home here. I haven’t been able to develop everything yet, but customer feedback from my first season seems to show that the Refuges are living up to expectations.”
